Medical Toxicology
Medical toxicology is a subspecialty of medical practice concerned with evaluating, maintaining, and restoring health for individuals affected by hazardous materials at work or in the community. It seeks to apply scientific knowledge of hazardous substances to an individual’s health condition.
Qualified Medix medical toxicology physicians can assist in achieving a safer and healthier environment, working collaboratively to:
- Provide medical screening related to worker’s abilities to work with specific chemicals or exposures, including pre-placement physical examinations, job placement assessments, periodic examinations, and maintenance of individual employee medical records requirements.
- Determine whether nonoccupational medical conditions impact on an individual’s ability to work in a chemical environment.
- Manage and/or treat work-related chemical illnesses and injuries, with emphasis on early recognition and intervention; and follow-up and monitoring people as they return to work.
- Provide guidance for case management and work issues for employees who have prolonged or complex chemical illnesses and injuries.
- General knowledge of the environment; familiarity with the toxic properties of materials used by people at home or work as well as the potential hazards and stressors of daily processes and jobs or tasks.
- Ability to determine fitness for work and/or disability for people who have chemical related illnesses or injuries.
